Most women in Switzerland don’t want to have children.
Figures from the Federal Statistics Office show 63% of women aged between 18 and 49 are not interested in having children. And it’s not a matter of money.
The birthrate is currently 1.28 children per woman – the rate needs to be 2.1 to maintain the population.
Financial incentives and tax breaks in the hope to encourage more women to have babies are proving ineffective. It’s not about money, many women say they have other interests and are concerned about the state of the world.
But Switzerland is not unique – low birth rates are common throughout Europe and other countries.
