Women street names in new development

Temporary street name placed in 2019 (c) suzy1919

The City of Geneva has agreed that the majority of the new street names in the La Praille, Acacias, Vernets district will be named after women, in an effort to equalize gender recognition.

Currently, only 16% of streets in Geneva are named after a woman.

While the motion easily passed, the Swiss People’s Party strongly objected, saying streets should be named after notable figures, not just because they’re a woman.

Maybe it will finally be the time of Grisélidis-Réal to get a street named after her. She was a writer, painter and sex worker. She fought for the rights of sex-workers – and workers generally.

She died in 2005 and is buried at the prestigious Cemetery of Kings near Plainpalais.

Several attempts to re-name streets after her have been opposed to by residents.
