Valais bar association says no new fire laws are needed

The association that represents bars and restaurants in canon Valais - GastroValais - has caused outrage by writing to all cantonal parliamentarians saying no new safety fire laws are needed.

The letter, signed by two senior members of the association, says a tragic event - referring to the fire in Crans Montana - should not be exploited to create an impression the current rules are insufficient.

But the father of one of the victims is furious. He says the debate is about dead children.

He points out that since the fire, many establishments have failed tests and some have had to reduce capacity. He says it’s obvious the current laws aren’t working.
