Home hunting even more challenging

Finding a home in Switzerland has just become harder still

The Federal Statistical Office reports 45,493 vacant houses and apartments nationwide on 1 June, or 0.93% of the housing stock.

That's a 6.1% drop in a year, and vacancy has now fallen for six years running. 15 cantons sit below 1%, with Zug at 0.20% and Geneva at 0.31% among the tightest.

In French Switzerland only Vaud is under the threshold at 0.87%.

Tenants' association Asloca blames a market building luxury flats while affordable stock has halved in three years, and is pushing an initiative for automatic rent controls.
