Swiss atlas says 'The Gulf of Mexico'

The publishers of the ‘Swiss World Atlas’ say they will not change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

The atlas has been the standard reference point for Switzerland for more than 100 years – it’s standard issue in Swiss class rooms.

The editor, Lorenz Hurni, considers the name change by US president Donald Trump – switching Mexico for America – as political appropriation.

But there are many naming disputes across the world. The Swiss atlas uses two terms for the Sea of Japan – Korea would like the world to use the ‘Korean East Sea’ – so both are listed.
