Rare cats found living in squalor

A botched police raid in Geneva ended up saving 17 cats from living in squalor.

In June in 2023 police were searching for armed robbery suspect – but broke into the wrong home.

There they found the cats in dirty conditions with a strong smell of ammonia.

The Cantonal Veterinary Service were called to make an inspection. They said the animals didn’t have access to food or water and the litter trays were overflowing.

Authorities immediately ordered the seizure of the cats – which were mainly the rare breed Sphynx cats, known for their affectionate nature and being hairless.

After several appeals, the cat owners lost their case to have them returned and were fined CHF 900 by the Federal Court.
