A new born baby girl was left at a baby window in canton Zurich on Saturday.

The hospital says she was less than 24 hours old when found – doctors say she’s healthy.

There are several baby windows across the country. The first one was setup in canton Schwyz in 2001. They’re available to new mothers who are in a dire situation and makes sure the child will be looked after.

Women who leave babies at the windows are protected under federal law. It’s not considered abandonment or abuse – and there’ll be no search for the mother.

If the original family don’t come forward at a later date – the child will be placed for adoption after a year.

On average, around 2 babies are left at a window across the country every year.
