Thousands of Swiss phone users have received a genuine UBS activation code by SMS overnight — the first stage of what the bank describes as a new, multi-step scam
The code is landing in people's inboxes even when they aren't UBS customers, because fraudsters are mass-creating unverified Twint accounts linked to Swiss numbers.
What arrives next is a phone call from someone claiming to be a bank representative, asking for the code — which would let the scammers activate a Twint account in the recipient's name.
UBS confirms the attack is targeting hundreds, possibly thousands, of numbers across the country.
The bank's advice is to share the code with no one and ignore unknown callers.
