The federal roads office is reviewing more than 130 new ramp-metering lights at motorway entries, aiming to smooth peak-hour traffic across Switzerland
The system holds drivers at red lights to control how fast they join the motorway, and has run at Cossonay on the A1 between Yverdon and Lausanne since 2021.
Cities and cantons warn the plan risks simply pushing jams onto cantonal and municipal roads.
They are asking to be involved in both the planning and the search for alternatives.
