Lausanne bike shelters get an upgrade

Lausanne's grey metal Vélobox bike shelters, mocked as "Soviet bunkers" since their rollout in January, are getting an artistic makeover

The city has set up a working group to let artists, schools and neighbourhood groups decorate them, much as electrical cabinets are already painted.

Despite the complaints, demand is strong — 340 of the 360 current spaces are taken, with 480 people on the waiting list.

Another 260 boxes are due to be installed by the end of the year, bringing the total to just over a thousand spaces.

A six-month subscription costs CHF 50.-, a full year CHF 100.-.
