Move to stop renovation evictions

It’s a commonly-used trick by landlords; evict the tenants so some renovation work can be done and then re-let the premises at a higher rate, even if the work was just some repainting.

A national parliamentarian wants the law to change. If the work can be carried out with either the tenant staying or only having to leave for a short time – then they can’t be forced out of their home.

Christian Dandrès has tabled a motion to make the change.

The government is rejecting the idea – but parliament will have the final say.

Dandrès says the practice is becoming more common and thousands could lose their homes as a result.

Some cantons, including Geneva, limit the amount that rent can rise after renovation, so such notices are fewer.
