The number of people living alone in this country has tripled since 1970, according to the latest figures from the Federal Statistics Office.
17% live alone.
A third of homes are couples – either with or without children. Three quarters of those are married.
The French speaking cantons of Vaud Geneva and Neuchatel have the highest number of single person homes.
It’s more common to be married with children in the central parts of the country.
