More delays at Gotthard Tunnel

A series of accidents caused major delays at the Gotthard Tunnel yesterday afternoon.

After two rear-end collisions in the tunnel, a 10 km tailback quickly formed for traffic heading north, meaning a wait of nearly two hours to get through.

A 4 km line was for those heading south.

Many schools, especially in the German speaking regions are currently on vacation adding to the high level of traffic.

The first accident was around 3pm, leading to the total closure of the tunnel for around an hour. It then had to be closed again to allow recovery vehicles access.

There were still queues of around 4 km 7pm last night.
