Many children suffer violent punishments

Campaigners are calling for a change in the law after a survey showed 40% of children in this country are subjected to either physical or psychological violence.

A study by the University of Fribourg for the campaign group, Child Protection Switzerland, reveals spanking is the most common punishment.

But it doesn’t have to be physical – psychological punishments are also common, such as insults and deprivation of affection.

Switzerland ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1997. Campaigners are urging the government to fully apply the convention by outlawing physical punishment for children entirely.
