Genevans will vote on a new property tax law as campaigners say it’s unequal and favour’s the wealthy.
Geneva has to change how it taxes property sales as the current system is against a new federal directive aimed at harmonizing the system between cantons.
Those against the new law say due to property price changes it means a large home which hasn’t changed hands for a long time will be taxed less than a more modest dwelling that may have been more recently sold.
Left wing parties say that’s unfair.
While the new law was passed by the Grand Council in November, campaigners easily collected enough signatures to force it to a referendum.
