Geneva will have Xmas lights

There will be Christmas lights in Geneva this year and the Lux festival will go ahead.

But the city has decided they will be switched off earlier – 10.30pm – instead of the normal midnight.

Authorities says the energy consumption of the lights is low. The city is trying to save CHF 2m a year in energy costs.

But there are other limitations. The traditional ice rink at the Jardin Anglais won’t go ahead this year and the city will follow the recently published guidelines to be followed by communes to lower the temperature of swimming pools and sports halls.

Shops and businesses will be under strict rules to switch of external lighting. Lights have to be off by 11pm – or not more than an hour after closure of the business if later.
