Geneva plan to charge city tolls move forward

Proposed toll area - (c) Swiss Confederation

The plan to impose a fee on all vehicles entering the centre of Geneva has taken a step forward with the Federal Department of Transport now examining the plan.

Bern will need to give the go ahead to allow the canton to impose the fee – which is known as the ‘Cordon Toll’.

The price charged will vary according to the time of day. It could be CHF 2.50 at peak time and a franc at other times. It will apply to passenger cars and delivery drivers. Trucks already have to pay and that won’t change for them.

The Green Party Geneva Councillor, Isabelle Pasquier-Eichenberger, says the time has come for something to be done. The roads are clogged and pollution is reaching unsustainable levels.

In addition to Geneva, federal authorities are also examining similar proposals in Biel, Frauenfeld, Zug and Aargau.
