Geneva local police wants blue lights and sirens

The local force in Geneva – the municipal police – have been fighting for the right to have blue lights and sirens on their vehicles for the last ten years.

They feel they’re not being listened to – and so are now taking legal action.

The local police say they’ve been given more responsibility over the last few years – but not the authority to act.

Not having the protection of blue lights and sirens has a practical impact.

Some local officers have refused to react quickly to a situation as they fear losing their driving licence. They’re also unable to get to the scene of a traffic accident rapidly or deliver a defibrillator.

The union is demanding a response from the canton within the next ten days.
