In Geneva, people who can’t afford to pay fines will no longer be sent to prison.
The Grand Council has voted to end the practice of incarcerating them at Champ-Dollon Prison, with a clear majority in favour.
Supporters say it’s unfair that those unable to pay are jailed alongside convicted offenders, often in poor detention conditions.
Green MP Sophie Bobillier called the move a victory, particularly for the most vulnerable.
Authorities are now being urged to expand alternatives like community service, electronic monitoring and semi-detention, keeping prison as a last resort.
