Geneva farmers pledge to fight landfill

Farmers in the Geneva commune of Satigny say they will use every legal means to fight plans by the canton to bury waste from incinerators in their fields.

The waste, known as ‘clinker’, is currently sent to a landfill in Bernex – but that will be full in a few years and an alternative is needed.

The canton wants to survey the fields to determine their suitability. But the farmers say they grow produce for the organic market and the fields are close to a nature reserve and waterways.

The battle to store the waste has been a cantonal headache for years. A spokesman for the Geneva Territory Office says it’s unthinkable to export the waste, either to other cantons or to France.
