Geneva Fan Zone binned

Qatar World Cup

There’ll be no World Cup fan zone on the Plainpalais in Geneva for the upcoming tournament.

The company behind the event has decided to pull the plug due to ongoing criticism, the threat of violence and an advertiser boycott.

The event company, Nepsa, could lose CHF 2m.

Questions had been hanging over the event for the past few weeks – but the decision was made yesterday afternoon.

The head of the company, Frédéric Hohl, says they have been called murderers, fascists and collaborators. He’s filed criminal defamation charges against some social media users.

Many complain the tournament shouldn’t be held in a country which limits minority rights, has a poor health and safety record, and has no football culture.

Many fan zones across Europe have already been cancelled for the same reasons.
