First pylon of new Geneva bridge installed

Geneva will soon have its first cable-stayed bridge – and it will be the only one across an autoroute in the country.

The new bridge is part of the development around Grand Saconnex. Commuters would have seen the first 38-meter-tall pylon installed yesterday.

The bridge design is needed as it will span 80 meters across the road. The extra length is needed to allow for a third lane on the autoroute. But work on that won’t start until, 2030 at the earliest.

The bridge itself should open in August, but the whole re-development won’t be finished until 2023.
