The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ruled against Switzerland for its decision to ban public demonstrations during lockdown.

The court said a blanket ban on certain behaviour needs strong justification and serious review by domestic courts.

By a majority verdict the judges concluded the ban on demonstrations over a long period was disproportionate.

Switzerland will have to pay CHF 3,000 to the Geneva Trades Union Association which took the issue to court.
