Burgleries rise again

Burglaries in Switzerland are on the rise again.

A new ten-year analysis by insurer AXA shows cases jumped by ten percent last year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

The peak season for break-ins runs from October to December, with Christmas and New Year’s Eve seeing twice as many incidents as usual.

Cantons near the French border are most affected  - Geneva tops the list with 8.5 burglaries per 1,000 households, followed by Vaud and Basel-City.

The average damage has also risen sharply, reaching CHF 7,000 per household.

AXA warns that organized crime is increasingly behind these thefts.

Meanwhile, the same is true for neighbouring France.

Figures from the French Interior Ministry shows properties close to the Swiss border are the most burglarized in the country.

The profile makes it clear that wealth is being targeted. The most common properties hit are large detached houses.

French police unions say they believe even these relatively high figures may be under represented as not all are recorded.
