Beekeepers in Geneva have been banned from moving their hives in some areas in an effort to halt the spread of a deadly disease.
Foulbrood was first detected in Vandoeuvres at the beginning of the spring – and has now been found in other areas.
It’s a bacterial infection which is deadly to young bees. It’s harmless to humans.
The cantonal Veterinary Office says hives within 2 km of the affected areas can’t be moved. That mainly affects Vandoeuvres, Cologny, Thônex and Hermance.
It’s a temporary measure which will last until the end of June.
The disease is spread by direct contact between bees.
