Fears of new night flights from Geneva

Debate is flaring ahead of the revision of the Federal Aviation Act.

The Greens and residents’ groups accuse the Federal Council of putting the aviation sector ahead of people living near Geneva Airport - and ahead of the environment.

The main point of contention is night flights. Campaigners say the new rules will thwart further efforts to cut nighttime noise and pollution.

Green National Councillor Delphine Klopfenstein Broggini warns it would undermine the 2019 vote setting environmental targets for the airport.

Bern rejects the claim. The Federal Office of Civil Aviation says the changes are minimal and serve the wider economy.

But the Geneva government is calling for a rewrite.
