Switzerland could buy European version of Patriot missiles

Switzerland was planning to buy Patriot missiles from the United States - but with relations with the US under scrutiny and the fuss of the purchase of US made fighter jets - the Confederation may opt for a new European model.

A new system, a joint development by France and Italy, could be available by 2029 - and politicians of all sides in Bern are interested.

There's little debate that such a system is needed. The government has already announced several initiatives to secure airspace.

The Federal Defence Department says the issue will be discussed by the Federal Council.
