A major debate is raging on what to do with the money that would have used to expand the autoroute network.
The Vaud minister for transport, Nuria Gorrite, says the best option is not to take any immediate action, but listen to the people. She says she believes one of the reasons for the rejection was a lack of public debate over the roads.
Some of the money is already used for urban improvement projects. The government could choose to accelerate those already agreed – such as the trams to Ferney-Voltaire.
Other ideas being floated include allowing cars to use the emergency lane on the autoroutes, and redevelopment of the most problematic exit ramps into urban areas.
The Geneva minister for mobility, Pierre Maudet, says all firms of transport should be examined together – such as a road and rail which should work together.
