Abstinence threatens the nighttime economy

We’re drinking less and less – which may be good for our health, but it’s proving to be bad for the nighttime economy.

The Zurich Bar and Club Commission is calling for political help.

A government backed survey shows over the last ten years the amount of alcohol being drunk has dropped massively. Now the survey says 12% of men have a drink every day – 30 years ago it was 30%. Similarly for women, it was 11%, now 5%.

Other figures back the trend, we’re drinking 1 million litres less wine than we were two years ago and, for the first time, beer consumption is below 50 litres per person per year.

But it also means we’re going out less.

Alexander Bücheli, from the Bar and Club Commission says a city without night life is a dead city and politicians need to start thinking about how they can support the nighttime economy.
