Experts are puzzled why far more people than expected have died this year – and on the face of it, it’s not Covid. But there are many questions.

Figures from the Federal Statistics Office suggest the number of people dying will be 15,000 over the predicted amount.

It’s almost completely made up of those over 65 years old.

Epidemiologist, Martin Röösli told the Tages Anzeiger it could be due to the summer heat, coupled with those who have had covid – and now have a weaker cardiovascular system.

It could also be down to poorer care due to the strain on the health system.

The Federal Health Office says it will continue to examine the figures, but it may be more than a year before we know more.
