Voters follow Bern advice

In a series of votes on Sunday - the people followed the advice of the government.

The proposed cut to the fee for the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation was rejected. The current fee will drop anyway due to a counter proposal - to CHF 300. But the decision to cut further to CHF 200 was thrown out by 62%.

The move to individual taxation - ending the practice of married couples submitting a joint return - was passed by 55%

The climate fund initiative - which demanded that up to 1% of GDP be spent in environmental policies was roundly rejected - by 71%

The Cash is Freedom initiative, which wanted to ensure cash was always available, despite the move to a cashless society was rejected as the government advised. It didn’t like the wording of the initiative and had come up with a counter proposal which has broadly the same aim. Voters backed the government’s plan.

Commentators suggest the results were a sign the people trusted the advice of the government.
