The globetrotter’s manual, the Lonely Planet, has named canton Valais as one of the top five places in the world to visit.

The guide says the charm of canton Valais is unique and offers attractions all year round and has world famous landmarks, such as the Matterhorn and the resorts of Verbier and Zermatt.

It’s also home to 41 of 48 highest mountains in the country.

Tourist experts say the blessing of the Lonely Planet guide should not be underestimated. Florian Eggli, a tourism lecturer at Lucerne University, says it has a particularly high level of credibility and its website gets 5 million visits a day.

He also points out, nowadays, users of the Lonely Planet tend to be older and wealthier and so will spend more money on their visit.
