Possible charges for foreign retailers

Foreign online retailers would have to pay into Switzerland's recycling system under a motion the Federal Council now backs

The National Council's environment committee says platforms based abroad currently avoid the disposal and recycling fees that Swiss manufacturers, importers, and shops already contribute to.

The committee wants every product subject to anticipated disposal or recycling charges brought under the environmental protection law.

With cross-border online shopping still growing, it argues the current rules have fallen out of step.
