Switzerland will foot the roughly CHF 1.5 million medical bill for the twelve Italian victims hospitalised after the Constellation hotel fire in Crans-Montana
The Federal Council confirmed yesterday that it is waiving reimbursement in this exceptional case, after the transfer of bills to the victims' families had strained relations with Rome.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the news, thanking Swiss President Guy Parmelin and calling it proof of the strength of ties between the two countries.
Under the EU free movement agreement, each country normally covers its own insured citizens' costs — but exceptions are allowed.
For the families, the decision lifts a heavy financial burden on top of their grief.
