The Lake Geneva region has overtaken Zurich as Switzerland's top economic hub, according to new federal figures
Geneva, Vaud and Valais together generated a gross domestic product of around CHF 190 billion in 2024, compared with CHF 167 billion for Zurich.
The shift comes as Zurich has lost major employers — Vontobel and Cembra banks have both announced they are relocating their headquarters, taking around 2,160 jobs out of the city.
Geneva and Vaud alone now account for more than CHF 168 billion in GDP, with a smaller combined population than Zurich.
