Switzerland's railway network is pulling paper recycling compartments out of station bins, after paper collection at its sorting stations crashed by more than 96% between 2015 and 2025
SBB says the near-disappearance of free newspapers explains most of the drop, and up to 60% of what remained was actually unsuitable — soiled or plastic-coated paper.
The compartments will be replaced by a second general-waste bin, now the biggest category by far.
The change rolls out across stations nationwide.
