Hottest summer ever claims record victims

Switzerland's hottest summer on record killed around 1,257 people between May and August, according to new estimates from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute

That's 5.5% of all deaths in those four months — the worst heat toll since the 2003 disaster.

Around 85% of the victims were aged 75 or over, and heat remains the country's deadliest natural hazard.

The figure does not yet cover September, which was also unusually hot.

A consolidated study is due in spring 2027.
