The Green Liberal Party in Geneva has launched two popular initiatives aimed to protect people from the heat.
They want the city to create more shaded areas and build a new swimming area near the Mont-Blanc Bridge.
The party says the closest area to the centre of the city which provides shade and swimming is Jonction – which is two kilometres from the centre – and so inaccessible for workers during a lunch break.
It’s asking for CHF 2m from the city.
The party points out that’s a bargain compared to the CHF 50m spent on the Eaux-Vives Beach.
It has until November to collect 3,200 signatures for each project.
