A French delegation visited the Geneva University Hospital last week to examine how doctors handle the delicate case of assisted suicide.
French president Emmanuel Macron has recently launched a debate in France on whether to change the law to allow it. Currently helping someone to die is illegal in France.
A French government spokesman, Olivier Véran led the team to Geneva and held discussions with health professionals and politicians, including the Geneva Health Minister, Mauro Poggia.
The French asked questions, such as how to determine if someone should be helped, the difference between palliative care and assisted suicide and how much does it cost?
But the difference between French law and Swiss was considered too different to make a legal comparison.
In Switzerland, there is no law that allows assisted suicide – but the law states helping someone to kill themselves with a selfish motive is illegal. Therefore, helping someone who wishes to die is legal.
