Younger voters are voting more - but still not enough

It’s well known that younger people don’t vote as much as their elders, but more of them are doing so.

And it could start to have a significant impact on outcomes.

Participation rates for those between 18 and 29 in the ten years up to 2013 showed that just a shade over 20% bothered – but that’s risen to 34% in the last ten years.

The young vote differently from older voters.

In 2021 the vote to bring in a law to cut CO2 emissions failed as nationally 51% said no – while 63% of younger voters agreed.

Geneva political scientist, Pascal Sciarini, told the Tribune de Genève that he believes schools need to be more active on teaching civics and holding their own debates to encourage the younger vote.
