Zero degree mark soars to new heights

The heat wave is pushing up the level of the zero-degree mark – now at 5,100 meters.

This is worrying the manager of the Hörnlihütte - a climber’s hut at the foot of the Matterhorn at 3,260 meters.

Martin Lehner says it was incredibly hot - 12 degrees - when it should be about 4 degrees at that altitude.

He points out the snow has gone and it’s possible to climb above 4,000 meters without crampons. This time last year, he says, they almost couldn’t open due to the snow.

There are worries the permafrost could start to melt, increasing the risk of rockfalls, endangering climbers.

Many mountain huts are also running out of water. They normally take their supply from the snow - but as that’s limited, so is the water.
