Geneva has a wine lake – metaphorically speaking – and local producers are calling on politicians to help them out.
Representatives from the Geneva Association of Winegrowers have written to the Grand Council saying they need help to clear massive stocks of unsold wine.
They argue cheaper imports are preventing them from competing and already local vineyards are not profitable enough, so many farmers are having to take second jobs.
Some are even considering closing.
They’re asking for active support from the canton – claiming the Federal Agriculture Act demands that winegrowers are supported.
