The Liberal party’s solution for more housing; build up

The Liberal party has made a proposal to deal with the housing crisis in many Swiss cities; build up.

According to Geneva national councilor Simone de Montmollin, densification in cities contributes to stopping urban sprawl, reducing commuting movements and preserving areas for agriculture. They’re calling for Swiss cities to increase the capacity of existing buildings, by adding one or two extra floors, wherever possible.

In the city of Geneva, such elevations are already possible and underway thanks to a law enacted in 2008. Although 150 new housing units per year may not seem like a lot in the city, that number could multiply by thousands nationally, if enacted.
