Eurovision is facing a deepening crisis after Swiss singer Nemo, the 2024 winner, announced they are returning their trophy in protest at Israel’s participation in next year’s contest.
Nemo, the first non-binary winner, argues that the event’s core values are incompatible with allowing Israel to compete while the war in Gaza continues.
Their move follows boycotts by Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland, after the Geneva based European Broadcasting Union refused to suspend Israel.
With only 34 countries currently confirmed, several broadcasters have yet to decide whether they will take part.
