Geneva police were on full alert last night as calls were made on social media services to gather in the centre of town and be prepared to riot.
The messages urged people to turn up armed with fireworks and smoke bombs. Some messages identified specific shops to target, such as FNAC and Foot Locker.
Police carried out checks on groups of young people on the streets around the Bel-Air area. One was found to have gloves and a balaclava on him.
Most were advised to return home.
