AI assists in recycling issue

A Vaud recycling firm has switched on an artificial intelligence sorting line at its plant near Yverdon, aiming to close Switzerland's poor plastics recycling record

Cand-Landi's new RC-Plast 2.0 line uses optical sensors and AI to identify plastic types 30 to 40 times faster than a human worker, with fewer errors.

Only around nine percent of Swiss plastics are currently recycled, against a new federal target of 55%.

The company plans to invest CHF 70 million in a wider industrial area, backed by CHF 2 million from the canton.

A new plant to sort all household plastics is planned at Bonvillars.
