Should police release nationality details

The lower house of parliament, the National Council, wants police press releases to always include the nationality of those involved in incidents.

The bill, backed by the Swiss People’s Party and some other parliamentarians, aims to harmonize practices nationwide.

Supporters say it’s about transparency, just like reporting age and gender.

But opponents, including the Socialists, Greens, and Green Liberals, warn of stigmatization and political exploitation.

Many news outlets in Europe have a policy of only mentioning nationality if it’s directly relevant to the story.

The Council of States will now decide if this sensitive measure becomes law.
