A small majority of the Geneva Council of State says it should study the feasibility of transforming the government offices in the Old Town into apartments.
It’s already policy to revitalize the Old Town.
The State owns 20 addresses in the Old Town – that’s the same as 325 four-bedroom flats.
Many have already been homes, they could easily be turned back into housing, say supporters.
But detractors say they would be expensive and likely snapped up by wealthy foreigners – and so empty for most of the time.
One Centre Party member points out the area is deserted at the night and weekends because there are so few inhabitants.
