A private security guard who opened fire on robbers at a jewellery shop in Geneva has been cleared of attempted murder on appeal.
The armed thieves attacked the shop on the Rue des Bergues in 2017. They forced their way in and bagged up jewellery and watches valued at CHF 650,000.
The private guard chased them down the street and fired 13 times. The robbers fired back several times.
Prosecutors say the guard’s actions were disproportionate and endangered lives. The defence argued he acted in self-defense.
The guard was cleared in the first court case, prosecutors appealed – and the guard was cleared again yesterday.
The robbers are already in jail serving a 10 year sentence.
