An unusual train ride from Geneva to Bern brought together politicians, business leaders, and journalists yesterday.
Organized by the Western Switzerland Transport Conference, the symbolic trip pressed for greater federal funding for French-speaking Switzerland’s railways.
The appeal comes just days before a major report on transport is due to be released. It’s been prepared by the Federal Polytechnic in Zurich. The trip is to make sure that western Switzerland is not left out of future plans.
Leaders warn that Romand infrastructure lags behind, with longer journey times, saturated lines, and bottlenecks affecting both passengers and freight.
They argue this threatens not just commuters but Switzerland’s second-largest urban hub around Lake Geneva - a key gateway to Western Europe.
French speaking cantons are united - they want faster links and equal treatment in federal planning.
